"It was a great opportunity for Matt (Etherington) and Dane (Hueston) to represent Alexandria on the biggest stage of high school athletics," said Alexandria Head Tennis Coach Matt DeVault. "Today was one of the most amazing atmospheres that high school players can enjoy in getting a chance to play in the state finals and represent their school." Coaches, fans, and players from all over the state go to the event for a chance to see the elite players. With tennis being a non-class sport, few players in small schools like Alexandria can ever get a chance like Matt and Dane did to show how special tennis is at smaller schools. The Tigers went into the semi-finals as the No. 3 seed and took on Floyd Central the No. 2 seed. Floyd Central is a school of 1800+ students and has been a state power in tennis for a long time. They ended the season ranked No. 13 as a team so the Tigers knew they had a tough opening round match-up. The atmosphere was powerful and unfortunately Alexandria dropped the first couple of games mostly due to nerves. A few early mistakes by the Tigers put them down 0-2. Not to give up, Etherington and Hueston quickly got back on track finally tying things up 4-4 before going ahead 5-4 in the first set, but the success was short lived as Floyd Central finished things off taking the next three games for a 5-7 win. Etherington and Hueston kept their composure to get the first game of the second set, but the loss of that first set loomed large as the Tigers kept knocking on the door, but could not get another game falling 6-1 in the second set. Floyd Central would go on to lose to the No. 1 seed and eventual State Champions from Park Tudor in Doubles during the afternoon match. "Matt and Dane showed why they were deserving of this special opportunity," explained DeVault. "They end their careers No. 1 and No. 2 in career wins in Alexandria Tennis history and after the sting of their first loss (They were 26-1 this season) wears off, they will appreciate their magical run." Etherington and Hueston will play in the North/South All-Stars on November 4 at DePauw University. They are the second pair of All-Stars from the same team ever in Alexandria History. The 1st pair was in basketball in 1996 (Mickey Hosier and Chris Hahn).
